Developer Options

25 PostgreSQL 18.6 parameters. Each one has its own animation and explanation.

Developer Options

  • allow_in_place_tablespaces: Let CREATE TABLESPACE with an empty location make a directory inside pg_tblspc (tests only).
  • allow_system_table_mods: DANGER: allow DDL on system catalogs that even superusers are normally refused.
  • backtrace_functions: Write a C stack backtrace to the log when an error is raised in the listed C functions.
  • debug_discard_caches: Throw away catalog caches constantly to expose cache bugs (needs a special build).
  • debug_io_direct: Testing only: bypass the OS page cache (O_DIRECT) for data files and/or WAL.
  • debug_logical_replication_streaming: Testing switch: stream (or spill) every change of large transactions immediately.
  • debug_parallel_query: Testing switch: force a Gather on top of parallel-safe plans even when it is slower.
  • ignore_checksum_failure: DANGER: on a data checksum mismatch, warn and use the page anyway instead of failing.
  • ignore_invalid_pages: DANGER: let WAL replay continue when records reference pages that do not exist.
  • ignore_system_indexes: Read system catalogs without their indexes (to work around a corrupt catalog index).
  • jit_debugging_support: Register JIT-compiled functions with GDB so they show up in backtraces.
  • jit_dump_bitcode: Write the LLVM IR generated for each JIT compilation into the data directory.
  • jit_expressions: When JIT is used, compile expressions (WHERE, projections, aggregates) to machine code.
  • jit_profiling_support: Write perf map data so Linux perf can name JIT-compiled functions in profiles.
  • jit_tuple_deforming: When JIT is used, compile the code that unpacks columns out of stored rows.
  • post_auth_delay: Pause each new session after authentication so a debugger can attach.
  • pre_auth_delay: Pause each new backend before authentication so a debugger can attach.
  • remove_temp_files_after_crash: Delete leftover temporary files after a backend crash (keep them only to debug).
  • send_abort_for_crash: After a backend crash, send SIGABRT (core dumps) instead of SIGQUIT to the others.
  • send_abort_for_kill: Send SIGABRT (core dump) instead of SIGKILL to a child that ignores the quit request.
  • trace_connection_negotiation: Log the SSL / GSSAPI encryption handshake decisions before authentication.
  • trace_notify: Very verbose DEBUG1 output for LISTEN / NOTIFY processing.
  • trace_sort: Log what each sort does: memory budget, in-memory or external, and CPU time.
  • wal_consistency_checking: Add full-page images to WAL and verify replay reproduces each page exactly (testing).
  • zero_damaged_pages: DANGER: zero out a page that fails verification (its rows are lost) instead of failing.
